IoT Workshop for Engineering Students

Workshop
January 20, 2024 - January 21, 2024
Engineering Block, University of Uyo

The ISEC Lab hosted a hands-on IoT workshop for undergraduate engineering students, focusing on practical skills for building IoT prototypes.

Workshop Overview

Duration: 2 days (8 hours total) Participants: 45 students from Computer and Electrical Engineering

Curriculum

Day 1: Fundamentals - Introduction to IoT architecture - Microcontroller programming (Arduino, ESP32) - Sensor interfacing (temperature, humidity, motion) - Basic electronics for prototyping

Day 2: Project Development - WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity - Cloud platform integration (ThingSpeak, Firebase) - Building a complete environmental monitoring system - Project presentations and feedback

Materials Provided

Each participant received: - ESP32 development board - Sensor kit (DHT22, PIR, LDR) - Breadboard and jumper wires - Workshop manual and code samples

Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, students: - Built functional IoT devices - Understood end-to-end IoT system architecture - Gained confidence in embedded systems programming - Formed project teams for further development

Feedback

The workshop received excellent feedback, with students requesting more advanced sessions on topics like machine learning on edge devices.

We plan to make this an annual event and expand to other departments.
